Reviews

“Meticulously researched and so beautifully written, it reads like poetry. This gifted writer spins a tale so rich and vibrant, you feel a witness to the actual events. The characters of Annan and Mairead had me utterly drawn into their lives. Marek was wonderful, spirited comic relief. 'Aye, bucko!' I will definitely read this author's work again.” Read Full Review Online

“I loved it. It is one of those books you think about even after finishing. Can’t wait for the movie.”

“This book was truly incredible. [Weiland] does such a great job of keeping the reader turning the pages. There’s something in this book for everyone: there is enough action to satisfy the adventure lover; enough impossible awakening love to satisfy the romantic; enough research to satisfy the historian, enough intrigue, betrayal and murder to satisfy the mystery lover, and enough mercy and forgiveness to satisfy the Christ-follower.” Read Full Review Online

“I consider literary-induced insomnia, inspiring writing, and mild fictional character obsession the marks of a great story. K.M. Weiland's thrilling historical fiction novel, Behold the Dawn, provides all of the above.... Great writing is equal parts verbal artistry and analytical detail, and Ms. Weiland covers both beautifully in this story. Behold the Dawn is sweeping and vast in scope yet character-driven and focused. The plot moves along swiftly, filled with action that crackles off the pages. The author's emotional investment in her characters is obvious, as is her pure enjoyment in the craft of writing. Battle-weary, honorable Annan, strong and faithful Mairead, and loyal, entertaining Marek are well-developed, realistic characters who held my sympathy tightly in their hands.” Read Full Review Online

“Normally I don’t like war stories, but there are always exceptions. What makes the difference goes beyond the blood-and-guts of everyday combat. The author of such a novel cannot help but show it in the background, but some other element must take center stage to capture my interest. An element that involves character. K.M. Weiland's book, Behold the Dawn, is such a war story.” Read Full Review Online

“I love stories about redemption, and this was definitely no exception. The characters are so real (and enjoyable to read about). I was so impressed by the love story. I loved the storyline. And the ending. And the moral. It was awesome.”—Laiel Upton, Tennessee

Behold the Dawn took my breath away. ...I was hypnotized by the author's gorgeous prose.... I became so captivated in the story, that I could hardly function until it was over. Before I'd even turned the last digital page, I'd already declared K.M Weiland to be my new 'favorite author of all time.'” Read Full Review Online

“This is the kind of history lesson I wish I had received in school. You were literally transported to that time and could really get a feel of the culture and life those people lived. Very well written and fast moving; I think I finished it in two days!” Read Full Review Online

“K. Weiland has produced a well informed and well researched historical novel here. We’ve got the authentic historical setting, the events and the society. We’ve got the fictional characters, the good guys and the bad guys (and those in between). We have depth of character, personal growth and spiritual progress. We have the variety in the broad sense, with the plot remaining fairly straightforward. It’s almost a relief to read such a steady and reliable book as this.” Read Full Review Online

Behold the Dawn is a novel set in the Third Crusade by talented author K.M. Weiland. With brilliant characterization, description and settings, this woman knows how to write. Weiland brings her characters and the world around them to life. As you turn the last page, it is hard to remember the story is only fiction, that the people are not real and living out their lives somewhere.” Read Full Review Online

“As usual, Weiland is as deft with words as the swordsmen in her book are with their weapons. With her words, she paints characters, scenes, and confrontations with an accomplished writer's authority…. K.M. packs more action into each chapter than many authors offer in an entire book.” Read Full Review Online

“The characters were brilliant (I loved Marcus Annan and Lady Mairead; Marek was bloomin’ awesome; and all the other main-ish characters were intriguing—sometimes frighteningly so). The plot was exciting and absorbing…. but the action never felt rushed; the pacing was just right. And, best of all, there was a crazy (and I mean that in the best way possible) plot twist at the end which I did not see coming at all (though in retrospect all the hints were there, craftily hidden within the conflict) and which made me want to flip right back to the beginning and read the whole thing over again.” Read Full Review Online

The language of this book, the flow of the words... I enjoyed. I was impressed with K.M.’s easy grasp of it and found it easy to follow the pace. As the words flowed page to page I could draw the pictures in my mind of what this layout looked like, I could clearly see Marcus with an internal as well as external battle. The story unfolded literally before my eyes. I enjoyed being a part of each characters' stretching and growth. It felt real and that is not always as easy task for any author to pull off—especially when you are writing out of our own time period…. The book was honestly a wonderful read that was so well written that I don’t even know how to express how impressed I was with the story line and the writing itself.” Read Full Review Online

“I look for simple pleasures in a book—good dialogue, an interesting story, some action or mystery and a touch of romance. KM Weiland provided all of that and more in Behold the Dawn. She has a lyrical voice and a way with words, mixing the old with the new in just the right blend. Marcus Annan is a compelling, tragic character, struggling against dark knights, darker men of the cloth, and darkest still, his own inner demons. Throughout the tourneyer’s ordeal, the reader is taken from scene to vivid scene by a writer who did her homework and presents the period with a keen eye. Behold the Dawn is an excellent read from start to finish.” Read Full Review Online

“This is a well written, well researched historical novel about the time of the crusades. Author K.M. Weiland pulls you in from page one and doesn’t let you go until you've turned the last. A definite enjoyable read.” Read Full Review Online

“I loved Behold the Dawn. I’m not normally a historical reader—in fact, I usually avoid them—but so many people recommended I read this book, I broke down and bought it. I’m so glad I did. Through the tale of Marcus Annan, K.M. Weiland shares some definite spiritual truths. But, it doesn’t stop there. The tale she weaves is both engaging and adventurous—a real page turner. I could barely put the book down, and found myself thinking about the characters when it was away on my nightstand—even thinking about them in the middle of the night!” Read Full Review Online

“K.M. Weiland’s Behold the Dawn has done something several other famous writers couldn’t do—given me a renewed enthusiasm for historical fiction. I began to read without any expectations at all except that the back cover blurb sounded interesting—I was interested in the time period of the Crusades and was curious to see how she’d produced a story around it. And what a story she has written! There are no clichés about the good versus evil of the Crusades in Ms. Weiland’s book. In fact, her hero is an outsider with dark secrets who is cynical about the upper echelons of the church and state even while being quite a spiritual and moral person. He is eventually forced to take a stand against the corruption that he abhors; he must also battle his inner demons as to his own worthiness in the eyes of God. Don’t, though, have the impression that this is some sort of religious tome—the story is as raw, as violent, as romantic, colourful and courageous as the times in which it is set.” Read Full Review Online

“This book is great. Ms. Weiland did an excellent job fleshing out her characters and creating a wonderful story. The twist at the end blew me away.”

" There’s plenty of action in this book with no lulls of note. The characters are of adequate depth with two strong protagonists, and the villains are particularly noteworthy. The storyline is complete and bereft of holes and coincidences. The romance is tender, the sidekick is one to be cheered, and there’s a solid component of mystery and intrigue.... You can't go wrong with this one."

Marc Schooley, author of The Dark Man

“I truly enjoyed reading Behold the Dawn. In Marcus Annan, Ms. Weiland has built a believably human hero, replete with flaws and issues that make him a truly conflicted character. His indentured servant, Peregrine Marek, is delightfully feisty and the mysterious monk who appears in the first scene brings a sense of mystery and dread with him from the beginning of the book. But one thing I particularly enjoyed about the book is the deep spiritual message I found in its pages. Redemption, undeserved love and loyalty are all well-built themes you will find in the pages of Behold the Dawn. Throw in a bit of romance and the stage is set for an enjoyable read that will leave you smiling.” Read Full Review Online

“I’ve always enjoyed knights in shining armor stories since I read my first King Arthur story. Ms. Weiland didn’t disappoint me with her work here. The hero wasn’t wearing shining armor but he was a knight, a knight conflicted with his past which was effecting his present and even possibly his future. The amount of research had to be enormous and it showed in the details of characters, location and era. I have a pile of favorite books that I don’t share, that sit beside my desk where I can pick them up and relive them again. Of all the books I’ve read through my many years, this is only the seventh that is in that pile which puts it in a category of its own.” Read Full Review Online

“Her characters come alive effortlessly and are realistically three-dimensional and multi-layered.... The plot is intricate and complex, full of surprises, twists and turns, with a big surprise near the end. And there is a beauty in the way her theme emerges naturally and powerfully from within the story. Really, the story has much of the gut-wrenching drama and emotional roller-coaster ride of a Shakespearean play. A thoroughly enjoyable and meaningful novel.” Read Full Review Online
