What has my attention this week?

Watching: Broncos Football
I mourn the end of summer with fierce mourning. The only good thing about it is: football! I’ve been told I’m extremely lazy when it comes to having to fun, but I always make time for football, even when it’s a squeeze on my usually maxed-out schedule. Die-hard Broncos fan, here. In the old days, I used to lament, “Why can’t Peyton Manning be on my team?” Well. 😉
Reading: Undetected by Dee Henderson
This book gets an extra shine in the spotlight for being the very last novel on my Kindle at the moment. I’m completely OCD about reading books in the order in which I get them, so I’ve been dutifully reading through every book on my Kindle for the last several years, before moving on to my toppling pile of paperbacks. I suppose it’s silly, since there are (thankfully) always more books, but I’m feeling a wave of accomplishment. This book is one of Henderson’s better ones in latter years. Not much going on in the conflict department, but it has a unique and totally realistic-feeling premise (about sonar research for subs) and a thoughtful and thought-provoking romance.
Listening: Long Night’s Ride by the Bar J Wranglers
This is classic cowboy music at its finest. If you ever get the chance to see the Bar J Wranglers in concert, they’re an absolute riot. But their music, all by its lonesome, is delightfully soulful, atmospheric, and true to its western roots. They offer a nice mix of old old tunes, as well Gene Autry and Sons of the Pioneers type stuff, with an eclectic mix of other stuff thrown in. This particular album happens to feature the absolute best rendition I’ve ever heard of “They Call the Wind Maria.”
Eating: Panda All-Natural Cherry Licorice Chews
I love red licorice almost as much as I loathe black licorice. But I gotta tell you: Twizzlers? They do not count. Health concerns aside, they taste like red tire rubber. Not good. But these comparatively healthy little gems from Finland are delicious and have no preservatives, no artificial colors, and no artificial flavors. Just don’t eat them all in one sitting…
Using: PenAgain Silver Ergo-Sof Pen
I took a break from typing up the first draft of my historical superhero work-in-progress to re-outline a couple of sticky scenes. For me, outlining = longhand writing. That means it was time to crack out the ol’ ergonomic pen to save wear on my wrists. The fact that it looks kinda like a rocket? Bonus points.
Cute Animal I Want This Week
I’m not eating anything that’s particularly interesting this week, however, as you mentioned sports: I am watching the Rugby World Cup. This weekend we witnessed probably the biggest upset in rugby history when South Africa lost to Japan! (Yes, we South Africans are still in shock)
Rugby has always interested me–although pretty much all I know about it is from the movie Invictus. :p
To me it’s the best sport in the world. I don’t know that much about football, but as far as I can figure out, football stops and starts more, where rugby is more flowing. (e.g. a tackle doesn’t stop play in rugby.)
BTW the USA is also participating in the Rugby World Cup. Their next match is against Scotland on the 27th of September.
To me, it seems kind of like a cross between soccer and American football.
Not surprising as football does have its origins in Rugby.
I am so getting this pen for my daughter. I worked for years to get her to hold her pen right and she always held it between her index and middle finger. Drove me crazy!! Now there is a pen for both of us!! I can’t wait to give it to her…LOL!
Maybe she was the one who was doing it right all along!
Eating fresh pineapple to aid digestion. Watching all the Poirot movies in order on Netflix. Reading Civility Rules by Jacqueline Vick, Listening to sermons from Matthew by John MacArthur on Grace To You. Using the Metrolink for cheap, hassle-free travel from OC to the SF Valley. Favorite cute animal… as always, my 14-year old tabby female, “Story.”
Sounds like a writer’s cat. 🙂
I just found a healthier-ish alternative to Altoids that I’m really loving called Vermints – my local market carries them in peppermint and cinnamon and they are very intense.
And I’m a Broncos fan too, born and raised in Denver. I’m old enough to remember QB Craig Morton and the Orange Crush Defense days and this is beginning to feel like that again, so very excited about the D this year. Plus I have a ton of respect for Gary Kubiak, I think he was a great choice. I’m expecting a fun-to-watch season!
Vermints sound good (cute name too). I like the Spryy mints with xylitol (healthy sugar alternative).
Fun blog. Glad I stopped by! I’m a fairly new blogger, so it’s nice to see who’s doing it well. I absolutely suggest ‘The Intern’, watched the Seahawks take the Bears, addicted to Dancing with the Stars, and can eat my weight in Uncle Woody’s caramel corn (it’s crack, I swear!). Anyway, great job!
Good to hear The Intern is worth watching. The trailers looked great!
Lucky Broncos fan. Meanwhile, I’m over here wondering how my Dolphins manage to let every good player they’ve ever had slip through their fingers…honestly, it seems like every game I watch, I spot a former Dolphin playing splendidly for somebody else. 🙂
Oh, you like classic cowboy music too? I’m a huge Sons of the Pioneers fan (coincidentally, I just did a blog post on my 12 favorite SOP songs), but I’m not really familiar with any present-day cowboy groups. I’ll have to see if there’s anything by the Bar J Wranglers on YouTube.
(Second attempt at posting this, so please excuse any accidental double comments!)
Really? I thought I heard the ‘Phins were on the upswing this year? Hope it works out for you!
They were supposed to be…but they got embarrassed by the Bills yesterday. Still, 1-2 technically is not terrible (yet!). They had just better beat the Jets next week!
6 things: watermelon – just right… drinking Tazo green mint tea… locals are drooling about KC; I’m hoping for a miracle from NY Yankees; reading/relishing Kite Runner; starting on holiday knitting projects… have a great week! @LatelaMary
Enjoying the first honey crisp apples of the season (talk about crack!), understanding how the blood moon would have been interpreted as a portent of the apocalypse in ancient times (as a historical fiction writer, love those moments when you can feel as those in the past must have felt), loving the perfect September weather on the Oregon coast, appreciating the plot twist at the end of Jane Smiley’s EARLY WARNING and eagerly awaiting the third book in her trilogy, GOLDEN AGE.
Ooh, I love the panda licorice! We get it at our local health food store. I can’t stand black either, but red is a favorite! And that. pen. looks. awesome… 🙂
It is! I use it while chomping on my licorice. 😉
