6 Things That Should Have Your Attention This Week

What has my attention this week? Favorite Christmas gifts edition.

Book: Heroes of the City of Man by William Leithart

As a matter of fact, I didn’t receive a single book for Christmas. Shocking, I know. I stopped asking for books a few years ago, because my TBR pile is always ginormous anyway. But I am enjoying this gift from a few years ago: an interesting study of ancient Greek literature from a Christian perspective. The introduction alone is worth the price of admission with its incisive analysis of the inherent morality of story.

Movie: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I finally got in to see Star Wars the Monday after Christmas. I went in cautiously prepared to be disappointed, but more than willing to respect the efforts of cast and crew regardless, since I know their greatest wish and intent was simply to pay homage to a beloved and world-changing movie–and to share a lot of fun in the process. I’m pleased to say that while it didn’t in any way blow my mind, I loved it from opening screen crawl to ending group shot. I didn’t mind the deliberate remix of New Hope, since I believe it was an intentional tribute that tapped into all kinds of lovely feelings of nostalgia. The rapid-fire banter was great, the score was lovely (of course), and the new characters are adorably awesome. (All you writers in the crowd can read my breakdown of the story structure here. Major spoilers, of course.)

Music: Studio Ghibli Soundtracks

This was probably my favorite gift. My brothers introduced me to Ghibli Studios this year, and I fell in love with Howl’s Moving Castle and particularly the score from Princess Mononoke. I’ve had the soundtracks on my wishlist ever since, so I was excited when one of my brothers surprised me with a three-pack for Christmas: Howl’s Moving CastlePrincess Mononoke, and Tales From Earthsea. Writing music for the New Year!

Fashion: Furry Boots

I’ve been on the hunt for a new pair of winter shoes. Something cute, warm, with a little bit of attitude. I finally gave up hunting because I just wasn’t finding what I wanted. My sister found these adorable little numbers at a garage sale this summer and saved them for me for Christmas. Perfect!

Food: Turci Firenze White Truffle Spray

Dirty-sock smell or not, I love truffles (and I don’t mean the chocolate kind this time). This little stocking stuffer should be delicious on pasta, potatoes, or even popcorn.

  1. Favorite gift this holiday? From hubby, an iPad Pro! It makes creating book covers so much nicer! 🙂

    • K.M. Weiland says:

Aw, cool. I was just thinking last night (as I was banging my iPad against the desk trying to calibrate the colors :p ) that I should probably think about getting a new one. What extra features does the Pro version offer?

  2. I guess my favorite gift this year was the book, The Wright Brothers by David McCullough. It would have been the DVD or Bluray of The Martian, but my wife got me the trade paperback version instead. I already had the ebook and the audio book. I told her I wanted the movie, but she couldn’t remember what I said. She has issues with her memory. Oh, well. She tried. My other favorite gift was a framed photo of my mom and dad taken back in the late 80’s or early 90’s. Actually, the book is probably number two on the list. The photo is precious to me!

  3. – Snacking on Rington’s Triple Chocolate Cookies sent to me from UK by my nephew
    – Reading Star wars Trilogy my daughter bought me for Xmas
Loving a new notebook “The Big Book of Random Crap” by Typo, with the attached card saying ‘All writers need a Notebook’ from another daughter
    – Watching 2012 ….. again

  4. Hubby gave me a Kindle Paperwhite and the Poldark DVD a couple of months ago. I love both. That book by Leithart looks good, I’ll have to check it out. I like white truffles better than black truffles! I love foxes, too!

  5. My husband got me Irish-themed earrings that I LOVE, and my MIL couldn’t remember that I wanted a Bob Ross paint set, so she gave me cash (which got used for the paint set.) I think I have all the things I need now to do some painting tonight. 🙂

  6. I don’t. But it’s a new thing I want to try, one of those life goals along with going to Ireland and New Zealand, and learning to fly a plane. Compared to those, this is an inexpensive goal!

    • K.M. Weiland says:

Good for you! I keep trying to commit to things like that, but haven’t been motivated to really make the time for much beyond learning French.

  7. Catherine H. says:

My favorite gift was a copy of Storming. I loved it!

    • K.M. Weiland says:

Aww, that just made my day. Not that I’m prejudiced or anything, but this is definitely my favorite response so far. 😉

  8. My favorite gift this year was a family-sized box of Frosted Flakes from my nephew – a young actor who is perpetually broke. I love practical gifts.

  9. It is the backlit one, yes. I have it on all the time. It’s adjustable. It’s an easier read than my old Kindle (keyboard) I love it.

    • K.M. Weiland says:

I switched from the keyboard version to the plain ol’ (non-backlit) touchscreen. I really love it as well. I’m not sure if I would like the backlit function. One of my favorite things about the Kindle has always been the fact that it isn’t lit. Still, it would be handy on occasion!

  10. My favorite gifts this Christmas were books. I got Elantris and The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson AND I got Dreamlander, the only books of your’s I didn’t own already. So excited to read them all! 😀
